Since May 1989 the STF Youth Hostel The Train has been parked on a blind track about 200 m north of Lund railway station on the west side of the trunk line, it is surrounded by park land and former allotments. Through a pedestrian tunnel under the railway, or over a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, you reach the cathedral and other sights in five minutes. The Train consists of six connecting carriages and one detached luggage van.
Three sleeping cars
The Train has three sleeping cars with altogether 36 traditional compartments - plenty of hard-wood and chrome. There are 108 beds in all. In some compartments the partition wall can be opened to make a six-bed compartment. Useful i e for families with children. One wash-room car
The wash-room car has eight toilets - all up-to-date. Water and drainage are connected to the municipal system. One reception car
This is where you check in. Also, table-tennis, hockey games, a coin telephone, a guest fridge etc is available for use by the guests. The café car
32 people can be seated in the café car. Breakfast is served every day between 7 and 9 a m. There is a microwave oven for the use of guests, and possibilities to cook eggs, pasta and the like. One part of the Café car is furnished with easy-chairs, where you can relax and read in genuine train atmosphere. In what used to be the luggage rack you will find magazines, books, games and leaflets with ideas for outings.
The Caféwagon has a hotspot (wireless internet connection) free of charge.
Here is also a acoustic guitar!Train times
Check in: 17.00 - 20.00 (1/11 - 31/3 17.00 - 19.00). If you have booked in advance, please check in by 18.00 unless another time has been agreed upon. No noise 23.00 - 06.00. Check out by 10.00. The youth hostel is closed over the Christmas and New Year period. When we open in the afternoon there are always a few beds available. You cannot book your own compartment on The Train, but whenever we have room, and we often do, you can have your own compartment for the price of a bed. Two people travelling together always get a compartment to themselves!Environment initiatives in line with the ideas of the Youth Hostel Movement
We are trying hard to maintain and stimulate the positive feeling of responsibility typical of guests at youth hostels. There are strategically placed bins where guests leave paper, glass, batteries, tins, metal, plastic, compost etc. With the money we get by selling tins and glass we buy table tennis equipment, games, and coal for the barbeque grill. The Train is part owner of a cooperative wind-farm. Good bikes can be hired at low prices for outings around Lund - into the countryside, to the lakes, to the sea at the "Lundahoj" bike rental project only 200 meters away from the hostel.
Who stays at the train?
A very mixed bunch! For instance: car drivers, inter-railers, people researching their family history, adult education groups, salesmen, university students' parents, relatives of Lund Hospital patients, new students, sports groups, train enthusiasts, globe trotters, old age pensioners, wedding guests, poets, magicians, cyclists, families with children, concert goers, old students revisiting, contract workers, tourists... By March 2007 we had had guests from 106 different nations. You too, are welcome!Free Parking!
